How Did
You Come Up With Your Vessel's Name?

Since I asked, Dom was good enough to oblige my inquiring mind with this storey of where the heck they came up with the name for Githic / scratch that / 'Gothic Pearl'.
It was such a heart warming accounting that I was compelled to share it with you all . .
If YOU have a sappy / scratch that / interesting storey of how YOUR boat was christened, email it to the Comodore OR post it on the Blog or Log Book & it will arrive here for sharing!
(That's sharing - not Sharon :-)

The Naming Of 'Gothic Pearl'
.

"Gothic (NOT Githic) Pearl" was a result of many month's worth of writing down anything that came to mind. We had note pads
everywhere!

We wanted to somehow incorporate the vessel's colours into the name, especially "black" given the traditional Trojan colours are black and white. From the dozens of possibilities (and we came up with some pretty good ones), we liked the word "Pearl" for the white (and because we think she's a gem), that came from "Ocean Pearl" the song. Almost called it Ocean Pearl but it wasn't quite right, no reference to "black" unless we were planning on sailing the Black Sea and it wasn't a name we came up with on our own, so it didn't quite have our own personal touch. Good thing we didn't call it that, we learned some time later that there is already an "Ocean Pearl" out there.

Since we were happy with "Pearl" for the white reference, the hunt was on for a way to refer to black and the kind of pearl it was, "Black Pearl" didn't sound quite right. Then one evening while watching a documentary about old England architecture on the
History channel, it hit me. They were talking about the Gothic era, its times, societal influences and designs, very interesting. Sharon also had some insight as a result of art history classes she had taken.

Anyway, it's association with old, dark, and having
mystic overtones, I thought was a great substitute for "black" and we loved the way it sounded. Somehow the word Gothic and what it represents just seemed to fit.
Thus, "Gothic Pearl" was born.

The Naming Of 'Boogaboo'
.

.
As you have probably already guessed, it was myself (The Commodore) who came up with name for our boat. That's not to say that Anchor Girl didn't have first crack at the whole thing. Our (her) first idea was 'Lazy Daze', but we quickly learned that name was in wide use. Remember, that was in the days of our first boat (18' Grew) & we didn't
have a VHF radio, so we had to learn it by way of our travels on the lake.
.
The next idea was 'Second Chance', but again that name was gathering no moss.
.
So, for our first three seasons (and 3 boats), we remained nameless . . . . Rather than knocking our heads (read: me ignoring any further suggestions from Anchor Girl), the matter was somewhat ignored. Until that fateful day that it struck me - 'BOOGABOO'!
By this point in my life I wanted something a little quirky and silly, to go along with my, how shall I say this - unique - character :-)
.
It was a perfect fit (of course I'm going to say that)! Aside from being unusual,
it forms an amalgamation of our (us & the kids') nicknames!
Here we go:
Me > Anchor Girl calls me (amongst other things) 'Bo-Bo'
Anchor Girl > I call her (as much as possible) 'Boog'
Jennipher > Anchor Girl calls her 'Boo-Boo'
Ryan (the used to be boater) > When he was a little kid, I called him 'Boogy Baby'
.
Now that I have shared that intimate information with you, you can figure it out for yourself where & how all the nicknames fit. Or not.
