Our First Trip Through The Locks
(Commodore & Anchor Girl)
July 25 - 30/03
For our summer holidays, we FINALLY took a trip through the 'dreaded'
Trent Severn Locks. Despite all of the somewhat discouraging horror stories
we heard beforehand, we threw caution (and one pair of sun glasses) to the wind!

.....
.....
Well, before seeing ourselves off, we all had a bit of a party (surprise, surprise) on the Friday night - complete with Danomano leading us through 'The Macerena'.
"Aaaaeeeyyyy Macerena!"

.....
Talk about a song to get you up on your feet & be-bop!
Diane & Anchor Girl couldn't help themselves.
Or was it Dan's sultry moves . . . . ?

.....
Janice looks like she's about two moves ahead of Dan here!
Or behind ?

..........
Yes, Sharon - I was just as surprised to see the new move that
Diane was trying on Stevie :-]

.....
"Sorry Graham, you're too late - we already played the Macerena . . ."

.....
These 'Cool Cats (fish)' swam by for some entertainment (ours).

.....
What can I say about this shot?
I told you I wasn't the only nut bar around the marina.

.....
Stevie sat beside me on the dock to - clearly - enjoy the shows.
Dan's & the catfish, that is :-)
As for Diane's earlier dance moves, well . . . . perhaps if she made him a drink?

.....
Right on queue -heeeeeeeere's Diane!

.....
Skipper, Pat - you guys going home already?

The Big Trip

.....
Here we are, the very first lock we have ever been through!
(At Gambridge)
And the boat didn't explode or anything!

.....
I expected that the only way I was going to get into any of these historic pictures is
if I found myself in front of a bunch of cows.
My devious plan was coming together nicely.
But would I have the good fortune of finding any more cows during our voyage???
Hmmm, I wonder ? ? ?

.....
Another lock. For all you who have traveled this route, you know that there are five locks in rapid succession (and nowhere to stop in between).
If you haven't got the hang of it by this point, well turn around.
OOPS, nowhere to turn around!
Best to forge on, mateys :-)

.....
Our first stop, beautiful Sunset Cove, in Bolsover.
We had barbecued Johnsonville Brats here for the first time.
A beautiful spot only five hours away from the marina, but a whole world away.

.....
Here is a shot of Sunset Cove Marina, the following day.

.....
Going through the 'Hole In The Wall' on Canal Lake.

.....
looming out of nowhere - Kirkfield Lift Lock.

..........
Here we are in the 'tub', going upward @ Kirkfield.

.....
Arriving at the top of the lock, we reach the apex of the Trent Severn Waterway.
From here it's downhill both ways.
And you said that I would never reach the top :-)
(You can see a short video of this by CLICKING HERE)

.....
Arriving at our farthest destination, Rosedale Marina, Anchor Girl relaxes with some poutine, while checking on the kids back home.
Will - She's eating again!!!

.....
Battening down for the evening.
We got a beautiful, calm sunset. A great spot to spend the night.

..........
This was taken at Rosedale Marina, looking eastward,
towards the Rosedale Lock.
If you CLICK HERE,  you can see a video clip of two Loons that swam
(& sang) past us, shortly after this picture was taken - and just before
the 3,287,657,922 mosquitos attacked our position!

.....
Heading back home (this is the canal in between Balsam Lake & Kirkfield),
we once again had the good fortune to be joined by the company
of more cows along the water's edge.
Four days, 100 miles & 173 photos & I only have two of me - and they BOTH have
cows in the background!
And some might say a little 'Bull' in front of them :-)

.....
Careful - don't drive too close to the edge!!

.....
Lots of driving (slowly) through the man made 'cuts'.
We were very lucky to have beautiful weather all the way along.

.....
. . . . And very little traffic. We were the only boat going down @ Kirkfield.
(You can see a short video of us getting 'stuck' in the lock by CLICKING HERE)

.....
This is  a shot of Lake Simcoe (Thorah Island) when we arrived back. The last section of the Trent was quite breezy, but the lake was eerily calm.

.....
One final look back at the entrance to the Talbot section of
the Waterway - until next time!!

.....
If you haven't already, do yourself a favour & take a few days on the system.
It's Beautiful!!
